Five members of the Canteen Aid and Corps went to Newton Monday evening to work at the canteen from six until twelve. They left 152 dozen cookies for the next group to have to serve. Those going were Mrs. James Loney, Mrs. Lillian Pierce, Miss Ada Woolheater, Miss Leta Rees, and Miss Irene Mott.
Knitted garments for the Red Cross are to be shipped out this week, Mrs. Harry Harris announces. Anyone having finished garments or yarn is asked to bring it to Mrs. Harris.
Vera Belle Province was named valedictorian of the Marion High School class of 1944 with a grade point average of 95.94. Mildred Garrison ran a close second and won the title of salutatorian with a final grade of 95.15. Harry Gilson placed third in the class with an average of 95.
Ilene and Arlene Pierce entertained LuEtta Soyez, Maxine Zeller and Leona Vinduska at a slumber party Tuesday night.
The freshman class was entertained with a picnic at the lake last Thursday evening by their sponsors, Miss Martha Angle and Miss Nadine Stallard. The hostesses served a wonderful feed and a grand time was had by all. It also was a farewell as Miss Angle and Miss Stallard will not return to Marion next year.
Miss Darlene Johnson leaves Saturday for Council Grove where she will be in the Personnel Department at the Herington Air Base. At present, she is substituting in the Clerk of the District Court's office for Miss Betty Ann Mersereau who is spending two weeks in Wichita.
Mrs. Al Sparks was painfully injured Saturday when the cistern platform at the hotel gave way beneath her. A hemorrhage of the tissues of the knee will keep her in bed two weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Socolofsky announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Jane, to Lt. William B. Course, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Course of Salina. Lt. Course is stationed at the Army Air Base at Romulus, Michigan. The marriage will be an event of June.
