Marion's flood threat was declared to be passed Tuesday by County Engineer Jim Meisner, unless additional heavy rains send streams in this area on the rampage again. Dr. P.J. Garrison, local weather observer, reported the following rainfall: Saturday, 2.87 inches; Sunday, 1.21 inches; Monday, 1.60; and Tuesday, .28.
Plans were rapidly being rounded out here Wednesday by officials of the Cottonwood Valley Saddle Horse Association for one of the finest horse race and horse show attractions ever to be held here. The race is planned for Thursday, August 5. More than $1,000 in prize money will serve to bring some of the finest horses in this area to compete for honors in the afternoon races and the night show.
Technical Sergeant W. H. "Hal" Young, who has been assigned recruiting officer for Marion and Chase counties, reports the following enlistments the past week: Eugene Vinduska, Pilsen, and Arthur Franta and Wilbert Rindt, Lincolnville; who signed in for the 269th Army Ground Forces Band at Ft. Riley.
New car deliveries during the past two weeks by Powell Motor Company have included a custom Dodge coupe to Mrs. C.C. Johnson; a custom 4-door Dodge sedan to Mrs. Henry Reh; a custom 4-door Dodge sedan to Dan Fisher; a custom 4-door town sedan to Earl Kreuter; and new Dodge trucks to Earl Krehbiel and Arch Dody.
On July 31, 1948, there will be issued by the Postmaster General, a commemorative stamp in honor of the author and editor, William Allen White. The first day issue of the stamp will be at Emporia, Kansas, where a celebration is planned.
