SEPTEMBER 21, 1944

Captain Thomas J. Howard, who was reported missing in action in Frances August 11, in a telegram from the War Department, sent September 1, is back with the American troops after have been a prisoner of the Germans for 17 days.

A hamburger fry held in Mrs. Fred Oyer's delightfully pleasant back yard on Old Settlers' Picnic Day was greatly enjoyed by Dr. and Mrs. Marner and daughter Zoe, Mrs. Sam Kline, Mrs. Mary Gazin, Mrs. Lottie Wheeler, Mrs. Lucinda Dockstader, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Jones and Mrs. Oyer.

The first meeting of the Amicus Club was held September 15 at the home of Bettie Lou Propp with Ella Meier assisting the hostess in serving dessert. The eight members present were Edith Fick, Ilene and Arlene Pierce, Lorene Schlotthauer, Vivian Klein, Dixie Bledsoe, Ella Meier, and Bettie Lou Propp.

The Marion Red Cross Canteen Corps received orders Tuesday to provide the noon meal for 20 WACs and 60 servicemen at Florence Thursday, Sept. 21. The following are members and aides in the Corps: Mrs. Leo Brose, Mrs. Leslie Powell, Mrs. Clara McKay, Mrs. James Loney, Mrs. Roscoe King, Mrs. Randolph Carpenter, Mrs. Howard Mullen, Miss Irene Mott, Miss Helen Seifert, Mrs. Hazel Meierhoff, Miss Neva Heiser, Mrs. Alfred Kirchner, Miss Lois Keazer, Miss Ada Woolheater, Miss Dorothy Pollitt, Mrs. Richard Brodhead, Miss Leta Rees, Mrs. Lillian Pierce, Miss Martha Hansen, and Mrs. Alex Case.

The Marion High School band, comprised of 65 members, attended the State Fair at Hutchinson, leaving at 5:30 Tuesday morning. They assembled at Convention Hall in Hutchinson, marched up Main Street, stopping at the Hutchinson Herald where they were given Cokes. They then marched with other bands up the Pike to the grandstand to be introduced and to play a concert. Those driving cars were Mrs. Alex Case, Mrs. Harry Harris, Mrs. Marion Pierce, Mrs. Leroy Hoover, Mrs. Ira Turner, Bill Christensen, Jake Stenzel, Mrs. Randolph Carpenter, Mrs. Rah Longhofer, Jake Hein, Joe Parsons, Adolph Woerz, E.M. Popp, and Harvey Hett.
