The most popular men in Marion when the fire whistle sounds are members of the Fire Department, guardians of Marion property against fire. Members of the department are Joe Swan, fire chief; Ollie Wight, Earl Magathan, Harold Bell, Harry Mott, Bob Nelson, Fred Knackstedt, Jake Hein, Joe Thiel, Clarence Baxter, Leslie Powell, George Powell, Walter Fruechting, Charles Lindenberger, E.L. Freeland, and Eddie Winter. The group meets once a month to conduct business and to practice with the equipment.

Ed Popp died Wednesday afternoon at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, as a result of a fall Saturday afternoon from a haystack. Mr. Popp was working on top of the stack in his hayfield west of town when the high wind caught the loaded hayfork, carrying it clear across the stack. Mr. Popp was swept off and fell, turning in mid — air and falling on his head at the base of the stack.

The DelMar Café and the Green Parrot Café each open Wednesday under new management. Mrs. Clara Dody has purchased the DelMar behind the Marion National Bank. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hansen have purchased the Green Parrot Café.

Diana Herbert celebrated her 11th birthday last Thursday evening with a wiener roast in the back yard of her home. Guests were Shirley Tiemeier, Peggy Hayward, Nancy Allen, Patricia Moon, Pauline Minear, Karen Brodhead, Charlene Youk, Marilyn Reh, Ginger Price, Janet Holub, Judy Coons and Billie Herbert.

Ben C. Truax, Wichita theatrical promoter, announced that Wayne King, "The Waltz King," with his orchestra and star-studded Revue of 35 people will open the 1947-1948 theatrical season with a combination concert and dance in the Wichita Forum on Thursday, Oct. 16.
