"Oddities of the Day" — Here it is the middle of October by the calendar, but Wednesday in came Dwight Linn with a beautiful pint of fresh strawberries with the dew still on them. Later in the morning, Walter Plue brought in a fragrant cantaloupe from his second crop this season.

Marion noses wrinkled in disgust over the weekend at the taste and smell of local water, but workmen at the water plant reassure users that the water remains pure to drink in spite of its obnoxious qualities. "As long as we must use a stream as the source of our water, we cannot get away from such spells with the plant's present equipment," a spokesman said. "The recent rain which washed grass and leaves into the creek with quantities of mud did the damage, but it is safe to drink," he hastened to add.

Warren Hayen invited the following friends to his home for and informal party after the game Friday evening: Patsy Harris, Pat Brose, Donna Christensen, Georgia Christensen, Cherridah Mullikin, Loyette Hollar, Max Merrill, Bob Reinke, Kenneth Conyers and John Hett.

Miss Norma Jean Province, whose 17th birthday was Sunday, celebrated Wednesday evening with a line party to the theatre after which she and her guests went to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Province for refreshments. Girls there other than the honoree were Corrine Longhofer, Jean Hagans, Janice Socolofsky, Dolores Edmunds, Wanda Ireland, Norma Jean Sandwell and Imogene Mathiot.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Keazer are the happy parents of a baby daughter, Karen Kay, weight 6 3/4 pounds, born Wednesday, October 16, 1946, at the Marion hospital.

Mrs. Fred Knackstedt entertained several children at a party Saturday afternoon in honor of her grandson, Larry Knackstedt, of Sedan, who celebrated his seventh birthday in Marion. Birthday cake and ice cream were served to Johnny Minear, Donnie McCarty, Floyd Baxter, Verlin Meier, Jerry and Michael Schwemmer, Caroline Susdorf, and Larry and Gary Knackstedt.

Norma Jean Amick, who is attending Graceland College at Lamoni, Iowa, was named queen of the 100-mile trail ride on Palominos, which was to have been covered by KMBC and pictured by 20th Century Fox. She was awarded a $100 matched luggage set for the honor.

George Helmer moved the street car from the Pilsen neighborhood which once served as the dental office of C.C. Jones on Main Street to his station east of town.
