Cases of influenza are on the increase in Marion County, Dr. O.C. McCandless, healthy director, states. The total reported by physicians of the county rose from 109 last week to 197 this week. The Peabody and Goessel area was the most severely affected, he said.
A code training set valued at $400 has been received by the local squadron of the Civil Air Patrol from the AAF to be used for training purposes.
Students who are taking piano instruction from Mrs. John E. Wheeler will appear in a recital Saturday in the city building. Mary Jeannine Williamson will be the pianist in Part 1 of the afternoon's program. Assisting in that portion of the program will be two of Mrs. T.B. Matlock's pupils, John Newcomer and David Willis Wheeler, who will recite. Appearing in Part 2 will be Carlita Bass, Laura Jane Bredemeier, Ruth Ireland, Max Merrill, Loyette Hollar, Donna Hobein and Marie Melson.
Troop 1 Girl Scouts met in the basement of the Methodist Church Monday. Officers elected for the ensuing year are: Sarabel Wolf, president; Mary Margaret Hannaford, vice president; Juanita Jo Ford, secretary; Patricia Henry, pianist; Delores Smith, song leader; Nancy Faye Allen, scribe.
The Wednesday morning Rock Island passenger train "bumped noses" with a freight headed south, damaging the engines of both trains to a small extent, O.W. Emrich, agent reports. After a broken pipe was repaired the trains continued on their way. The passenger train was heading into the siding when the freight, unable to stop in the required distance, struck it head-on. No one was hurt.
