Word was received this week that the application of H.F. Lehrer, Wichita, for a permit to operate a bus line between Wichita and Emporia through Marion had been granted by the state corporation commission. Also granted was an application by A.R. Funk of Hillsboro for a line to operate between Wichita and Abilene. The line through Marion, which will be known as the Kansas Central Lines, will be from Wichita through Sedgwick, Valley Center, Newton, Lehigh, Hillsboro, Marion, Elmdale, Strong City and Emporia.
Sidney Holder, Marion's oldest citizen, will pass his 99th milestone June 16. His daughter, Elizabeth Holder, who lives with him, says he is able to be up all the time and is in fair health. The sweet potato plant business which he has conducted for many years is still in operation with his daughter doing the largest share of the work.
John Backhus who farms a section of land in north Marion County, near Tampa, has an alfalfa mill on his farm for grinding dry hay into a meal, most of which they are shipping to eastern points for fee, according to an article in the Hope Dispatch.
Marriages announced in this issue included those of Arlene Hegle and Jack Straub, Marjorie Larsen and Wilbur Hett, Margaret Eck and LaVerne Miller, and Margaret M. Pachta and Paul J. Vinduska.
On Monday, June 10, the following were matriculated in the youth conference at the College of Emporia: Miss Phyllis Beu, Miss Donna Powell, Miss Betty Williams, Miss Phyllis Suffield, Miss Joan Bell and Miss Lois Jean Kelsey. Leslie Powell and Jay Mehl transported the young people to the conference.
Captain Emil Kapaun, Father Kapaun, as he is known to this community through his long service to the Catholic church at Pilsen, came home Friday after 15 months in Burma and India. He is on inactive status and is a "free man" as he puts it, until further notice.
The building housing the College Hill School, District No. 66, located on the Marion-Dickinson county line, one mile east of Highway K-15 is offered for sale by sealed bids. A lack of pupils caused the school to be closed. Reorganization of the district will occur at a later date.
Billy Wayne McKibben, Dennis Richards, John Newcomer, Harold Byram, Dale Hobein and Junior Powell spent last week at Camp Wood near Elmdale.
