Combining two big events, the traditional Marion Old Settlers' Day and a giant Horse Show, each of which would be worthy of a special day in itself, the local committees in charge of plans for the big celebration on September 11 and 12 predict the largest and most interesting program in many years.
A large machine to be used in the manufacture of concrete building blocks, has arrived in Marion according to owner Jake Oblander, and will be erected immediately and put into operation. The machine, which has been expected for some time, is a big one of the new vibrating type, and will be housed on the Oblander property on South Freeborn. Quite a number of orders for the blocks are already in, Mr. Oblander said.
Vandals went out of their way to destroy property at the Country Club Monday night. They tore the screens off the porch and the door, took the benches nailed to the bath house loose and threw them in the pool, ripped another bench to pieces tearing it loose from a tree and threw it in the pool and added a door off the bathhouse to the watery pile, Sheriff Lloyd Davies reports. Investigation is in progress.
A new American Legion post, in Marion County, named the Gilbert-Poppe American Legion Post was organized August 14 in Lincolnville. Forty veterans of World War I and WWII signed as charter members.
Elton Petersen and Dean Hansen of Marion are attending a two week CAP encampment at the Herington Air Base with about 500 other boys. According to the Pilsen items, Bob Navrat, Glenn Hartke, Arnold Franta and Jimmie Tilton from the north part of the county are enjoying camp also.
Mrs. Jake Thiessen entertained with a birthday party Friday afternoon in honor of her daughter, Enid's birthday. Girls and boys present were Carol Krispense, Wanda Lou Propp, Joyce Ann Kline, Mary Ann Skibbe, Elva Funk, Shirley Stenzel, Gerald Skibbe, Larry Stenzel, Jimmie Thiessen, Marvin Janzen, Archie Stenzel, Lloyd Funk, and Ralph Vogel.
Raleigh Johnson, proprietor of Johnson's Barber Shop, has added a new chair to his establishment, and Steve Winchester, formerly of Marion, is operating.
Members of the graduating class of 1944 of the Marion High School enjoyed a picnic at the water works park Monday evening. Those in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Perry, Carlsbad, N.M., Mr. and Mrs. Bill Richardson, Misses Mildred Garrison, Nancy Colburn, Ada Frances Bell, Mary Jo Utting and Carolyn Hayen, Don Kirchner, Buster Beisel, Bob Hagans, Max Tharp, Edwin Beu Jr. and Boyd Higgins Jr.
