Prayers of heat- weary people were answered Saturday night when rain began falling and continued all night. Subsequent falls brought the total to exactly three inches in Marion. Cool, cloudy days and chilly nights have been a welcome change throughout the week. Vegetation and humanity alike are taking a new lease on life.
Laird Dean, native of Marion County who became one of the state's leading bankers and a public figure of wide renown, will be back in Marion Sept. 12 to headline the afternoon program in the park honoring the old settlers who gather here each year in their traditional celebration, picnic and reunion.
The Conoco service station and café on the hill was sold last week by John Seifert to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Metzler. The Metzlers took over last Thursday and will continue to operate the restaurant and service station.
Wes Schwendiman was injured Wednesday morning in an accident which occurred when he attempted to halter a bull to take it from the barn. The animal lunged crushing Schwendiman against the bar door. He was taken to the Hillsboro hospital where he is recovering from a severe case of shock and heavy bruises.
Several members of the graduating class of 1942 met in a downpour of rain at the waterworks park Sunday afternoon for a reunion. The group went to Stenzel's Service Station for refreshments of watermelon. Members present were Virginia Murray Welch, Winfield; Marlys McGinness Piper, Wichita; Frances Mehlinger, Eileen Hoover, Frances Nelson, Alfred Chill of Junction City and Bud Pierce.
The girls' choir of the Christian Church of Marion presented a program at the Christian church in Newton Sunday evening. The choir is comprised of Mildred Garrison, Betty Williams, Zeffie Swehla, Helen Hett, Phyllis Suffield, Vera May Soyez, Lois Kelsey, Joan Bell, Norma Jean Province, Leota Rae McKibben and Donna Clair Miesse. Francis Roberts is the director.
Miss Nancy Colburn is entertaining guests at her home this afternoon, Thursday, at a pink and blue shower complimenting Mrs. Keith Gimson of Belle Fountaine, Ohio, who is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe King.
Alden Slusser was able to be brought home Tuesday from St. Francis Hospital where he has been undergoing treatment for polio. He is extremely weak and is most affected in the left hand and left leg.
Miss Lorraine Smolik, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smolik of Tampa, became the bride of Frank Havlik, son of Mrs. L. Havlik, Tuesday, Aug. 20, in an impressive double ring service read by Reverend Leo Kelty at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
The addition of new proscenium curtains of draped red velvet and a silver screen curtain plus red velvet draperies for entrance doors complete the interior redecoration of the Kaw Theatre. An ultra modern new popcorn machine adds quite an effect in the foyer.
