Academic stats impress administrators
Ken Arnhold, Marion High School principal, presented student academic statistics information Monday at the USD 408 Board of Education meeting.
At the conclusion of the first nine weeks (quarter) for the 2003 school year, the following statistics were announced:
— Within the student body of 210 students, 55 students or 26 percent have a 3.75 grade point average (GPA) or above, 44 students or 21 percent have a 3.5 to 3.74 GPA, and 33 students or 16 percent have a 3.0 to 3.49 GPA.
— In the senior class of 2004, 71 percent have a 3.0 GPA or above.
— In the junior class of 2005, 52 percent have a 3.0 GPA or above.
— In the sophomore class of 2006, 72 percent have a 3.0 GPA or above.
— In the freshman class of 2007, 65 percent have a 3.0 GPA or above.
"These statistics are very impressive," said Gerald Henderson, superintendent. "We've got a lot of smart kids."
Arnhold also provided information for Students in Good Standing. To meet this criteria, students must have all passing grades, no unexcused absences or tardies, and no office or citizenship referrals (discipline problems).
Students in Good Standing are rewarded by being able to take a half day off from school, with approval and completion of assignments.
At the completion of the first quarter in 2001, 65 percent of the student body were in good standing; in 2002, 70 percent were in good standing; and in 2003, 81 percent are in good standing.
"This is another example of a program that was given a chance and worked," said Arnhold.
