Accidents reported
The following accidents were reported to Marion County law enforcement agencies:
Esther M. Schafers, 76, 425 N. Cedar, Marion, was backing from her driveway in a 2000 Chrysler Town & Country van at 10:20 a.m. March 30, and struck a parked vehicle, a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup owned by Matthew H. Classen, 538, N. Freeborn, Marion. Marion Police Chief Josh Whitwell reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.
Joseph R. Unruh, 18, Walton, was stopped at a stop sign at Lincoln and Main streets, Marion, in a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse at noon April 12, when Clayton J. Shewey, 16, 514 S. Adams, Hillsboro, who was driving a 1998 Dodge Dakota pickup, backed from a parking space and struck the Unruh vehicle. The pickup was registered to Andrew J. Shewey, of the same address. Abi A. Humber, 16, 111 N. Wilson, Hillsboro, was a passenger in the pickup. There were no injuries and less than $1,000 in damages, reported Chief Whitwell.
A 2007 Ford Mustang, owned by Dorothy D. Engel, 412 1/2 W. Eighth, Florence, was parked in the traffic-way of a parking lot in the 200 block of West Main Street, Marion, at 1:40 p.m. April 14, when a 1993 Ford Aerostar van driven by Jo L. Harber, 59, 103 E. Ninth, Florence, backed from a parking stall and struck the car. Samantha Harber, 33, and Regina Noonan, 4, no addresses listed on the report, were passengers in the van. Chief Whitwell reported there were no injuries.
A 2002 Ford Explorer LL, owned by Gasper Covarrubias, 630 W. Fifth, Florence, was parking, facing west on Santa Fe Street, Marion, at 1 a.m. April 19, and was struck in the left quarter-panel and bumper by an unknown vehicle. Damages were listed at more than $1,000, reported Chief Whitwell.
Kevin L. Clegg, 45, 110 S. Vernon, Lehigh, was westbound on Goldenrod near U.S.-56 on a 2002 Honda motorcycle at 6:30 p.m. April 30, when a second vehicle crossed the center line, forcing the motorcycle into a ditch. The second vehicle did not stop. The motorcyclist was not injured, reported Marion County Sheriff Deputy Larry Starkey, and there was more than $1,000 in damages.
Christina D. Delk, 39, 1139 Limestone, Peabody, was westbound on 140th Road and Quail Creek in a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban at 11:30 a.m. May 1, when she reportedly fell asleep, went into a south ditch, slid sideways, and struck a driveway, rolling once. The driver was transported by LifeTeam air ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, reported Deputy Starkey.
Shelby L. Dirks, 38, 706 W. Grand, Hillsboro, was eastbound on Goldenrod near U.S.-56, starting to turn into a curve on a 1998 Honda motorcycle at 12:01 a.m. May 2, when a gust of wind caused the driver to lose control, laying the motorcycle down and entering a ditch. Marion County Sheriff Deputy Jim Philpott reported Dirks was injured but did not indicate if he was transported to a hospital.
Caridad J. Rivera, 34, Herington, was northbound on U.S.-77 near milemarker 218 in a 2007 Pontiac GTO at 1:40 a.m. May 3, when a deer came from an east ditch. The driver swerved to miss the deer, left the road, and rolled the vehicle three-and-one-half times in a west ditch. The vehicle was registered to Gwen and Philip Miller, 112 S. Date, Hillsboro. The driver was flown by LifeWatch to Via Christi Medical Center-St. Francis Campus, Wichita, reported Marion County Sheriff Deputy Matt Vogt.
