Accidents reported

The following accidents were reported to Marion County law enforcement agencies:

Charles Lynn Thornton, 27, Manhattan, was northbound on U.S.-56 near 240th Road in a 2002 Hyundai at 8:25 p.m. Sept. 6, when a deer came from a west ditch and was struck. Marion County Sheriff Sergeant Jeff Soyez reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.

Norman C. Bouwie II, 52, Wichita, was northbound on Indigo Road near 80th in a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 24, when a deer entered the road from an east ditch and was struck. There were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages, reported Sergeant Soyez.

Rose M. Gatsh, 77, McPherson, was westbound on U.S.-56 near Quail Creek Road in a 1995 Ford Taurus at 8 a.m. Sept. 30, when an accident occurred. It was reported that the driver had possible injuries and there was less than $1,000 in damages but no other details were given. Marion County Sheriff Deputy Matt Vogt was the investigating officer.

Gerald J. Wiens, 56, 407 S. Lincoln, Marion, was stopped at the corner of North Cedar and Main streets, Marion, and waiting to make a left turn in a 2002 Ford XL van at 3:40 p.m. Oct. 4, when Wendy S. Smeltzer, 46, 205 Vine, Marion, struck the rear of the van with her vehicle, a 1986 Buick passenger car. The vehicle was registered to Barry L. Mai, of the same address. Marion Police Officer Robert Soyez reported there were no injuries and less than $1,000 in damages.

Aaron R. Stepanek, 18, 305 N. Adams, Hillsboro, was turning south from a westbound lane on D Street, Hillsboro, in a 2004 Dodge Neon at 6:35 p.m. Oct. 12, and did not see a 2001 Ford Taurus driven by Jordan D. Hackerott, 18, Kingman, that was eastbound on D Street. The Stepanek vehicle turned into the Hackerott vehicle, reported Hillsboro Police Officer Brad Richards. Terry T. Bates, 24, Depew, N.Y., was a passenger in the Hackerott vehicle which was registered to Kay Hackerott of the same address. There were no injuries listed and more than $1,000 in damages.

Heath D. Dirks, 22, 372 340th, Tampa, was northbound on 27th Road near Navajo Road in a 1991 Toyota pickup at 7:45 p.m. Oct. 15, when a deer came from an east ditch and was struck. Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Duane McCarty reported the accident but there were no injuries or dollar amount of damages listed.

William W. Slocombe, 69, 956 Pawnee, Peabody, was southbound on Pawnee Road near 120th in a 2005 Buick passenger car at 10 p.m. Oct. 16, when a deer came from a west ditch and was struck. Phyllis A. Slocombe, 69, of the same address, was a passenger. There were no injuries and less than $1,000 in damages, reported Marion County Sheriff Deputy Larry Starkey.

Junior K. Jost, 90, 156 Eisenhower Drive, was eastbound on Main Street in a 1996 Buick Century at 9:47 a.m. Oct. 18, when he struck Harold Bowers, 94, 404 E. Santa Fe, Marion, who was crossing Main and Third streets going north on a three-wheeled, motorized scooter. Bowers was transported by Marion EMS to St. Luke Hospital with possible injuries, reported Marion Police Officer Steven Janzen. Bowers was treated and released. There was less than $1,000 in damages.

Larry D. Hoffman, 51, Tribune, was backing from a private drive on Grand Avenue, Hillsboro, in a 1998 Ford van at 2:35 p.m. Oct. 21. Mary A. Schmidt, 61, 401 Floral Drive, Hillsboro, was westbound on Grand Avenue in a 2004 Mercury van and struck the Ford van. Debbie Hoffman, 49, of the same address, was a passenger in the Hoffman van. Hillsboro Assistant Police Chief Jessey Hiebert reported there were no injuries and less than $1,000 in damages.
