Adah Gilbert

Adah Gilbert, 90, died March 24, 2004, at Friendly Acres Retirement Community, Newton.

Born Nov. 5, 1914, on a farm near Spearmore, Okla., she was the daughter of Frederick and Anna May (McBride) Groves.

She graduated from Waldo High School in 1931, where she was active in women's basketball. She attended and graduated from Wesleyan Methodist Seminary.

On Dec. 25, 1936, she married G. Carol Gilbert. The couple co-pastored at a number of United Methodist churches. They spent 18 years together as pastors of Eastmoor United Methodist Church at Marion. The couple had a radio program out of Emporia, "Gospel Singspiration," for more than 30 years.

Survivors include her husband, G. Carol of Friendly Acres Retirement Community, Newton; a son, Dr. C. James Gilbert of Greenwood Village, Colo.; a sister, Grace; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Saturday afternoon at Friendly Acres Chapel with the Rev. Lynn Sifrit of Salem United Methodist Church of Newton officiating. Burial was in Marion Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established with Friendly Acres.
