Al Martens

Alvin "Al" Martens, 89, Lehigh, died Sept. 16, 2003, at McPherson Memorial Hospital.

Born April 2, 1914, at Lehigh, he was the son of the late George and Hattie (Guhr) Martens.

He was a farmer. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He married Aldene Matz on April 28, 1951, at Hillsboro.

During World War II he was a gunner on a tank in Germany, one of the five Martens brothers in uniform. The only one still living is Harvey.

Survivors include his wife, Aldene, of Lehigh; son, Gayland Martens of Kenai, Alaska; daughter, Rita Prieb of McPherson; brother Harvey Martens of Park City; sisters, Frieda Birkle, Anna Smith, and Elde Pschigoda all of Hillsboro; and two grandchildren.

Services were held Friday afternoon at Zion Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, with Pastor John A. Ryding officiating. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Hillsboro.

A memorial fund has been established with "Kids With Dreams" of McPherson.
