Albert Ollenberger
Albert William Ollenberger, 90, died May 12, 2004, at St. Luke Hospital, Marion.
Born Dec. 21, 1913, on a farm north of Marion, he was the son of William and Mary (Mehlinger) Ollenberger.
He attended public schools in Marion County and lived most of his life in the Marion area, except for a short time when he lived in Scotts Bluff, Iowa.
His military service began in 1941 when he entered the U.S. Army in an artillery division. He served in the South Pacific Theater in New Guinea, the Philippines, Luzon, and Australia. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
After returning to Marion, he worked as a mechanic for Obley's Firestone and later for Frank Nelson Service Station. In 1950, he began working for Scully Estates as a conservationist and remained with them until his retirement in 1979.
On Jan. 17, 1942, he married Evelyn Olsen in Yuma, Ariz., while he was in the service.
He was a member of Eastmoor United Methodist Church, the American Legion, and a charter, lifetime member of the VFW post.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Billy and Ronald; and a sister, Eldenna Dunn.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Marion; a son, Bryce of Palm Springs, Calif.; a brother, Leslie Ollenberger of Salina; as well as many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday at Eastmoor United Methodist Church with the Revs. John Goering and Rick Branson officiating.
Dick Schwartz gave the eulogy. Bob Brookens sang "The Gift of Love." Anita Brookens was organist.
Casket bearers were Bill Olsen, Kim Olsen, Richard Vogel, Chris Meierhoff, Forrest Smith, and Jack Taylor.
Burial was in Marion Cemetery with full military rites.
Memorial funds have been established with Eastmoor, and the VFW and auxiliary.
