Alf Landon to be portrayed at Kansas Day celebration
Loren Pennington will portray former Kansas governor and presidential candidate Alf Landon during Marion's Kansas Day Celebration Jan. 29.
The presentation will take place at noon at McGillicuddy's and is sponsored by Marion County Democratic Women.
Pennington, a professor emeritus of American history at Emporia State University, is a member of the Kansas Humanities Council History Alive! speakers' bureau.
Pennington will portray Landon, the underdog who was defeated in a landslide by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1936 presidential race. But during the next five decades, Landon's moderate political views won him wide respect and the role of Kansas senior statesman.
Reservations for the roast beef dinner are $10 per plate. Call Janet Bryant at 382-3418 for reservations. Deadline is Friday.
