Ammonia added to city s drinking water

Marion city officials and engineers began adding ammonia Monday to the city's drinking water.
Marion City Commission were told the news Monday that the process was going as planned.
Combined disinfection, as part of the city's requirement to become EPA compliant, will be distributed through city customers' water lines this week.
Tropical fish owners need to add a chemical to tank water to protect aquatic life from the ammonia.
In other business:
— Further condemnation action of a house at 1018 Denver Street was put on hold Monday by Marion City Commission when additional information was brought to the city's attention.
The property was condemned by the city and will be demolished but proper documents must be filed due to the owners' divorce.
An affidavit will be filed by city attorney Dan Baldwin in the county register of deeds office of pending action by the city.
The issue will be addressed at the next commission meeting.
— The commission approved the monthly billing for June.
— Warrants for $137,253 and payroll for $32,092 were approved. A Westar Energy payment of $85,840 contributed to the higher than usual amount.
— Harvey Sanders, public utility superintendent, reported reconstruction of three blocks of Lawrence Street had begun.
The commission will meet at 4 p.m. Monday in the city building.
