Andy Holt awarded VFW scholarship

Andrew Holt, senior at Marion High School, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Department of Kansas Veterans of Foreign Wars Endowment Association.

The scholarships are awarded to selected children and grandchildren of members of the Kansas VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary.

Holt received the award through VFW Post 6958 Marion.

Holt's grandfather, Arnold Holt, is a veteran and a member of the Marion post.

Kaye Steele, senior vice president of the Marion post, said "A lot of paper work had to be completed for the competition."

In the past 10 years, Steele said there have been four applicants with two receiving awards, including Holt.

Holt plans to earn at least a bachelor's degree in some field of science.

"I'm interested in chemistry and biology with an emphasis on zoology," said Holt. He wants to minor in music. He is considering a career as a chemical engineer or field researcher regarding a species of animal.

Holt has been active in the Boy Scouts and earned Eagle Scout rank.

As part of his application for the VFW scholarship, Holt wrote a short statement regarding his desire to further his education.

"I enjoy learning," wrote Holt, "and am especially excited and fascinated about science, especially chemistry and biology. Most of my badges I earned through Boy Scouts are science related. I like to study things and find out why they happen that way. In order to become a scientist, I have to further my education."

Holt is considering attending Emporia State University but has not committed to the school. He currently is taking classes through Butler Community College of Marion.

He is the son of Terry and Ann Holt of Marion.
