Annual pilgrimage to Pilsen is on Veterans Day
The Archdiocese of the Military Service will hold its fourth annual pilgrimage to Pilsen on Nov. 11, Veterans Day.
The event is held to honor Chaplain Emil Kapaun and to pray for those currently serving this country.
Bishop Joseph Estabrook will be the principle celebrant at the 11 a.m. Eucharist at Holy Family Parish's St. John Nepomucene Church. A wreath-laying ceremony with honor guard will follow the Mass, after which lunch will be served.
Kapaun, a priest of the Diocese of Wichita, was an army chaplain who died in 1951 in a North Korean prison camp.
He has been granted the title of "Servant of God," and his life is continuing to be investigated to determine if he may be canonized a saint in the Catholic church.
Born at Pilsen, Kapaun has the distinction of being the most decorated chaplain in the military. He served in World War II and the Korean War.
This year's pilgrimage is sponsored by St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Community of McConnell Air Force Base. The public is welcome.
