Arlie Smith
Arlie Smith, 92, died Oct. 18, 2003, in Florida.
Born Jan. 15, 1911, in Crescent, Okla., he was the oldest of three sons born to Orris and Ola Smith.
He grew up in Guthrie, Okla., and Marion, graduating from Marion High School in 1928.
He graduated from Washburn College of Topeka in 1933 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and from Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration, Cambridge, Mass., in 1935 with a master's degree in business administration.
In 1934 he married Edith Mae Keazer of Marion. He worked as a Certified Public Accountant in New York, N.Y., then held various senior management and director positions with a number of companies in the Northeast United States.
While raising his family, he lived in Troy, N.Y., for many years and served as an officer and board member of many organizations including Samaritan Hospital of Troy, N.Y., United Way (Red Feather-Community Chest), and the Speigletown Volunteer Fire Company in Speigletown, N.Y.
He also served as head coach of the Speigletown Maulers village ice hocky team in the mid-1950s.
Both Arlie and his wife Edith were avid anglers and fished throughout the United States and Central America.
After living in the Northeast for many years, they returned to live in Topeka. He relocated to Florida after the death of his wife in July 2003.
Survivors include his daughter, Marilyn C. Ives of Leesburg, Fla.; a son, Donald S. Smith of Surprise, Ariz.; two brothers, Lewis Smith of Hillsboro and Harold Smith of Wichita; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Graveside services were held Friday morning at Marion Cemetery with the Rev. John Goering officiating.
A memorial fund has been established in his name with Eastmoor United Methodist Church or a local hospice.
