Assisted living facility one step closer to reality
Marion City Commission approved a limited guaranty Monday for the assisted living facility.
The guaranty is for $25,000 and will obligate the city for the life of the project, said Dan Baldwin, city attorney.
"It probably isn't a 'forever' deal," said Baldwin, "but on paper it is." Once equity is "built up" the obligation becomes minimal.
The total project cost for the assisted living facility is $925,000.
In other business:
— The city ended the year within the allotted budget spending 90 percent including carryovers.
Linda Holub, city clerk, presented the financial information to the commission. Commissioners approved the quarterly financial statement, December investment and collateral report, and the December financial statement.
— Two cemetery board reappointments were approved. Phyllis Kreutziger and Bud Pierce were appointed to additional three-year terms.
— Warrants in the amount of $33,365 were approved.
— Harvey Sanders, public utilities director, presented a written report. Maintenance is being performed on the fire trucks by city personnel. The street sweeper now is repaired and in operation.
— Commissioners heard complaints from department heads regarding the poor Internet service. The service is being provided at no charge to the city in exchange for the city's water tower being used by Tri-County Telephone.
Janet Marler, librarian, reported that the library did not have any Internet service last week.
Michel Soyez, police chief, said his office probably has the best service of the city offices but it still was not acceptable.
"I have to have e-mail capabilities all of the time," said Soyez. He stated that he's been using his personal e-mail for city business because of the poor service at the police station.
Dan Baldwin, city attorney, said that he had written a letter, per instruction from David Mayfield, city administrator. The letter stated the city's dissatisfaction with the service.
— Soyez reported that the new police car had been delivered.
Commission recessed to executive session for attorney/client privilege information. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.
The next commission meeting is at 4 p.m. Monday in the city building.
