Barr collects championship at Halstead wrestling meet
An unusual early-week wrestling tournament Jan. 22-23 at Halstead may cause Marion High School Warrior wrestler John Barr III to hope for more tournaments to be rescheduled due to snow.
Barr III took first place in the 152-pound division of the Halstead High School invitational wrestling tournament, which was postponed from its original Jan. 12-13 dates.
This was the second tournament championship of the season for Barr III, who also claimed top honors at the Herington meet.
Only six Warrior wrestlers participated in the event, as many schools brought reduced squads due to scheduling constraints. With 24 schools competing, this was Marion's largest tournament of the year thus far.
Cody Wildin placed fourth in the 119-pound division, and Dillon Wildin wrestled to a fourth-place finish as well at 130 pounds.
"Cody and Dillon both wrestled well in tough brackets," said Marion/Peabody head coach Chad Adkins.
Snow didn't stop the Warriors from participating in tournaments Jan. 20, with the varsity traveling to Eureka and the junior varsity competing at Leon-Bluestem.
Derek Riggs earned the highest Warrior finish at Eureka, placing fourth in the 215-pound class. Barr III placed fifth, while Nick Klenda took sixth at 189 pounds. Cody Wildin and Dillon Wildin scored sixth place finishes as well.
"We started out wrestling very well, but faded toward the end of the day," said Adkins. "We are working hard on getting consistent."
The Warrior junior varsity fared better than their senior counterparts, landing three firsts and two seconds at Leon-Bluestem.
First-place finishers for the Warriors included Logan Richmond, 130, Levi Anderson, 135, and Sheldon Boone, 145.
Thomas McGee, 135, and Mark Kukuk, 140, took home second place honors.
Marion won both matches at the Lyons double-dual match Jan. 18. Team scores and individual results are listed.
