Baseball team watches season end against Bluestem

The Marion baseball team ended their season on a sour note Tuesday at the Class 3A regional tournament in Marion.

The Warriors fell to the Leon-Bluestem Lions 3-1, in a game that found Marion unable to score runs and get hits.

Head coach Sean Spoonts said that the lack of hitting was a major component in the loss.

"We didn't hit the ball in key situations," Spoonts said. "When you only give up three runs you should be able to win. Key players didn't get the hits. You ought to able to score runs. When we had guys in scoring position we didn't capitalize on it."

In the first inning, with runners on first and third, the Warriors attempted to steal second, when the Bluestem catcher overthrew the second baseman scoring Matt Rhodes from third base.

The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead.

But in the middle half of the game, the Warriors watched their small lead evaporate as the Lions went on a hitting and scoring spree that netted three runs.

The Warriors attempted a late-game comeback in the top of the seventh inning, as Rhodes connected on a pitch and beat the throw out to first.

With one out in the seventh and Rhodes on first base, Mitch Enos hit a blooper in front of the third baseman and flew down the first-base line where he slid in for a single.

Marion left the two base runners stranded to end the game.

Despite the disappointing loss, Spoonts said that his team was one of the most competitive since becoming head coach.

"We were as competitive as I've ever seen a Marion baseball team," Spoonts said.
