Be a cheerleader
Take 250 youth, ages four to 15, and 50-plus coaches. Throw in some umpires, concession stand workers, and fans, and you've got the Marion REC summer ball program. No doubt about it, summer sports are BIG in Marion.
This summer, more than 20 local teams are participating in the program. At least two games are played every night at the Marion complex.
We've got some talented players, dedicated coaches, fair officials, and great facilities. Each game draws parents and grandparents, rooting for their favorite players.
It's exciting to see the players improve throughout the season. If you haven't had a chance to come out and watch the action, make time this week.
It's good for the players to learn about teamwork, rules, and fair play. However, coaches and fans need to remember "it's just a game." The players are out there to have fun; when coaches and fans get out of control, it ceases to be fun for anyone.
Learning about teamwork and sportsmanship goes hand-in-hand with respect for officials and others on the field.
It's fun to watch. It should be fun to play. Don't get too worked up if a player doesn't catch the pop fly, hit the ball, or tag the runner out. Don't yell at the umpire for a bad call. It's just a game.
Come out for a game. Grab a drink and hot dog at the concession stand. Cheer on the teams and root for the players — no matter which team they are on. After all, they're all our kids.
