Bernard Hayen
Bernard Nelson Hayen, 82, died April 22, 2005, at Houston, Texas.
Born Sept. 4, 1922, at the family home in the Youngtown community northeast of Marion, he was the son of Fred and Florence Hayen.
"Bing" attended school in Marion and graduated from Marion High School.
He entered the U.S. Army in the engineer corps, but soon was transferred to the AAF Cadets. After training he flew B-17s out of England during World War II.
After the war, he became a regular officer in the newly-created U.S. Air Force. His career took him to Colorado Springs as the Air Force Academy was taking shape. He worked at White Sands testing ground in the early years of the space program. He was in the Air Force for 23 years, retiring in 1963.
He was involved in the family dairy operation in southeast Kansas. He was a partner in a group that developed some of the area in the New Strawn community near John Redmond Reservoir. He lived the last 20 years of his life in Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; daughter, Amanda of Katy, Texas; two sons, Bernard and Kerry Hayen; three brothers, Warren, Don, and Jan Hayen; two granddaughters; and a host of other family members, nieces, and nephews.
