Bernhardt elected to district FCCLA office

Jessica Bernhardt, Marion High School sophomore, has been elected as district secretary for FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America).

The MHS FCCLA chapter is a member of District G which is comprised of 16 school districts.

Ten candidates sought election for various district offices with Bernhardt being selected as secretary.

"I have really enjoyed being a part of the organization," said Bernhardt. She also is the treasurer for the MHS chapter.

Myrta Billings is the adviser for the organization and is pleased with Bernhardt's leadership.

"In the 2- 1/2 years that I've been the adviser, this is the first time any one from MHS has even ran for office, nonetheless been elected," said Billings.

Billings said the criteria for district officers is to complete the officer candidate application, write an essay as to why the student wants to be an officer, and obtain signatures from the organization's adviser, school administration, and parents.

Officers need to complete one year as a member of FCCLA.

The secretary's duties include taking minutes of all district meetings and sending correspondence to all district chapters.

"FCCLA is a wonderful way to teach students leadership responsibilities," said Billings. College scholarships are also available to members, added Billings, which serves as an incentive for involvement.

There are 21 members in the Marion FCCLA chapter. Membership is open to any MHS student.

Bernhardt will attend district officer training April 5 in Wichita, during the state leadership showcase.

Bernhardt is the daughter of Dennis and Donna Bernhardt, Marion.
