Bernhardt selected for state press academy

Donna Bernhardt, Marion, has been selected as one of nine to attend the first Kansas Press Association Leadership Academy.

Bernhardt is general manager of the Marion County Record and secretary-treasurer of Hoch Publishing Co. Inc., which publishes that newspaper, the Hillsboro Star-Journal, the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin, and the Checkerboard which is the official publication of the World War II 99th Infantry Division Association.

The KPA Leadership Academy will meet bi-monthly for a year, with most meetings to be in Topeka..

Bernhardt and the other eight participants will be introduced Friday evening during the annual KPA convention, reception, and banquet at the Marriott in Wichita.

The academy will dwell on the newspaper's role, strategy, and community leadership. Other areas include operations, organization, open meetings and records, taxation, local government, recording history, mirroring the community, libel and legal issues, building a team, achieving goals, and having the courage to take a stand.

Participants must attend all sessions in order to graduate. Graduation will be held during the KPA annual convention in 2003 at Topeka
