Better than nothing

Almost nothing in my mind compares to a cool north breeze after a 100+ degree summer day.

I walked out of the house about 7 p.m. Sunday to find the air still stiflingly hot. I took a few steps toward the garden to view the drooping plants and flowers, when all at once a brisk wind blew in from the north, sending shriveled tree leaves through the air.

I was exhilarated. I rushed back into the house, threw open all the windows, and allowed the cool air to flow through.

I felt energized. After gathering eggs and feeding the cats, I grabbed my weed chopper and went to work on some unsightly plants that had grown up in spots around the barnyard, attacking them with a vengeance.

Afterward, I sat on the glider rocker in my flower garden and savored the remaining daylight and pleasant air as kittens romped at my feet and among the plants.

The only thing that could have made the evening better would have been a two- or three-inch rain to give new life to the parched grass and dying crops. But I had to admit, the cool breeze was better than nothing.
