Ho-hum
World Series
lacks intrigue
Well, it's over. I never thought it would get here, but one of the most lack-luster World Series has now been put to rest.
I've never been more bored, watching a Major League baseball series than I was this past week.
Granted, I enjoyed the dickens out of the Cubs/Marlins series and the Red Sox/Yankees series, and that's probably why I detested the whole Marlins/Yankees series. I like intrigue in games, and a little "underdog" formula.
Years ago, I stopped watching baseball altogether after the strike, and I've been hoping to fall back in love with the game — but that love was squelched when Chicago and Boston failed to make the World Series.
But seriously, how can fans cheer for a team like the Yankees? They're good, I understand that, but what team wouldn't be good with that payroll?
Until the Major League puts a "true" salary cap on the league, teams like the Yankees will continue to dominate. I know the Marlins won the series, but who do you think has the best chance to make it back to the series next year, New York or Florida?
n I've been awe-struck by the Marion High School football team this season.
The Warriors outscored their opponents 265-49 since losing their first game of the season. Marion also has put together a seven-game winning streak, both extremely impressive numbers.
The fact that the Warriors have held their opponents to just 49 yards is a testament in and of itself — that's just darn impressive.
Marion also took home the final Cottonwood Valley League championship a week ago, and the coaching staff recorded their 100th and 101st wins in the last two games. What can I say — these kids and coaches are a special breed. Good luck to you all in the weeks to come.
n From the "can you believe it" file, the National Basketball Association begins its season tonight. My wife can hardly stand it. One minute she's watching the NBA finals and two weeks later, she's watching the exhibition games.
Someone should tell Commissioner Stern that more games doesn't always mean more interest. In fact, I get mad enough because I have to overlap my NFL highlights with hockey highlights on ESPN. Now I have to share my NFL time with NBA. Forget it.
The only thing I'm anxious for is watching the Los Angeles Lakers implode and LeBran James make his debut. Other than that, add a week or two to the NFL season, and subtract about two months from the NBA season, and you've got a recipe for success — at least for me.
