Beyond the Arc

Being at the top isn't always easy. At least that's what I realized this past weekend, as my undefeated Chiefs were beaten by the Cincinnati Bengals.

The league and the media acted as if the Bengals had won the Super Bowl, and I guess I got a little sick of hearing how the Bengals "shocked" the undefeated Chiefs.

Shocked? Most KC fans had a pretty good idea that the winning streak couldn't last all season. In fact, many analysts predicted that the Chiefs would surrender their undefeated season to Cincinnati last weekend.

Perhaps it was a shock to everybody else, but for most of us it was simply a bump in the road.

When you're on the top of the mountain there's always those trying to knock you off. It just comes with the territory.

n Congratulations should be extended to the Marion High School football team, who concluded their season Nov. 8 against Hesston with a 9-2 record overall.

The Warriors led 6-3 heading into half time, but the team was eventually bumped from their quest of a 3A state football championship, falling to the Swathers 24-6.

The value of having a strong senior class could never be more evident. Marion seniors should be commended for their leadership and the respect they showed the community, the coaches, and the team.

n It looks like the Kansas State Wildcats might have been able to challenge a national championship this season had quarterback Ell Roberson been healthy.

K-State's dominance over Nebraska is both evidence of a growing football program at KSU and the declination of the Huskers program under Frank Solich. Solich should be shown the door at the end of this season — and it's likely he will if Nebraska is smart.

n Surprise, surprise. Several players from the Oakland Raiders football team have allegedly tested positive for THG, or in medical terms tetrahydrogestrinone.

A CBS report stated that defensive tackle Dana Stubblefield, center Barret Robbins, linebacker Bill Romanowski (shocker) and defensive tackle Chris Cooper all tested positive with the illegal substance and could each face four-game suspensions.

Amazingly, Raider coach Bill Calahan told ESPN that he "hasn't had any confirmation on (the illegal drug use by his players) from the league office. Normally when a player does get suspended, the day that they get suspended is the day that I'm informed. So at this point I haven't heard from the league yet."

Uh, Bill, you must be the only man in the world that would need confirmation for something we've all known about for some time.

"Bill Romanowski uses illegal steroids?" You've got to be kidding?
