Beyond the Arc: Abandoning cautious criticism for Chiefs' season

About this time of year, I usually get cautiously optimistic about the Kansas City Chiefs chances during the upcoming NFL season.

But this year feels different.

Players, coaches, and even the fans (myself included), have an undeniable optimism minus the caution.

I'm not sure if it's the success the Chiefs enjoyed toward the tail-end of their season last year, the fact that they have the greatest running back in the league, or the thought that it's just their time.

Whatever the reason, this will be Kansas City's greatest chance to make to the playoffs and win the super bowl since head coach Marty Schottenheimer was ousted.

Things do look positive for the Chiefs' roster, too.

Trent Green appeared to gain some confidence last year. Tony Gonzalez stills leads the NFL in touchdown catches for a career. And, of course, the quick and nimble Priest Holmes, who appears to be healing quite well.

Add to the offense, a new-and-improved KC defense, a solid kicking game, and special teams unit, I think you've got a pretty good recipe for success. And the cook to mix up those ingredients is one of the NFL's all-time greats.

So, I'm throwing caution to the wind this year.

In the past, I've talked about how the Chiefs seem to rip my heart out every season. This year, I won't except it. There will be no more talk of the team choking, blowing the big game, or the crazy decision to pick Elvis Grbac over Rich Gannon years ago.

No, instead, I'm going into the season with absolute blind faith. I'm surrendering my hopes and fears to the one player I think can lead the Chiefs (my Chiefs), to the promised land. So don't let me down, Priest.
