Beyond the Arc: Roy's curse lifted at KU

Can you believe it? Ol' Roy is heading to the Tar Heel State. The ever shiny and loyal heart of Roy Williams was tarnished Tuesday night when the coach accepted the head basketball coaching position at North Carolina University.

Apparently the coach, who supposedly bled Crimson-and-Blue, couldn't resist the temptation of the Tar Heel force.

It should be of no surprise to those of us who have cheered for the Jayhawks in the past 15 years under the Williams regime. He's disappointed us virtually since his appointment as head coach.

And while he has disappointed us with missed opportunities at the national tournament and the numerous early exits in the first couple of rounds of the same tourney, no one can argue with the man's integrity, at least, until now.

For a man, who has built his name and career on the University of Kansas with claims of sincerity, loyalty, and honesty, Ol' Roy has erased 15 years of faithful service - or at least what we saw in the mirage, with a tearful good-bye.

The best part of Roy leaving KU, might be just that — him leaving.

North Carolina will be a better team for having him, but Kansas may be a better team without him.

With talk circulating about the University of Illinois head coach Bill Self taking the position at Kansas, KU fans can begin to think about winning the "one" that seemed to elude Ol' Roy, without apprehension.

Even though I'm bitter about seeing Roy leave, (for what reason I'm unsure) I think we (KU fans) all will be better for it.

So to Roy, I say good-bye and good riddance.

When the national tournament rolls around next March, I won't have to wonder if another championship will pass KU by, because the coach, who failed to win the big one, won't be sitting on our bench.

So Hawk fans be optimistic and join with me in chanting: Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk, take your hex to UNC.
