Bill Newhouse

William "Bill" Newhouse, 80, died May 19, 2004, in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Born April 15, 1924 in Sayre, Okla., he was the son of William and Lena Newhouse.

He graduated in 1942 from Will Rogers High School, Tulsa, Okla. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1943, serving as a bombsight technician at numerous bases. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant following cessation of hostilities.

Following World War II, he joined National Cash Register Co., eventually retiring after 40 years of service.

He married Grace Dougherty Oct. 24, 1949, in Hinton, Okla. She died in 1999.

He was a volunteer for various organizations throughout his life, including Boy Scouts of America, Musgrave-Pennington Neighborhood Association, Knights of Columbus, and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. As a parishioner of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Oklahoma City, he was among those who provided volunteer labor to construct the church, which features a glass sanctuary and open courtyard surrounded by massive concrete panels.

Survivors include three sons, William G "Jerry," of Oklahoma City, Okla., Jeff and Diane Newhouse of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Matt and Cheryl Newhouse of Ankeny, Iowa; five grandchildren; and dozens of nieces and nephews.

A wake was held May 23 at Smith & Kernke Funeral Home, Oklahoma City. The Rev. Charles Schettler offered prayers. Jerry Newhouse gave the eulogy.

Mass of Christian Burial was held May 24 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. The Revs. Rick Stansberry and Charles Schettler were concelebrants.

Burial was in Resurrection Memorial Cemetery, Oklahoma City, Okla., with an honor guard provided by Ft. Sill, Lawton, Okla.

Memorials include Carmelite Monastery of Piedmont, Okla., St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Birthright of Oklahoma City, or simply offer a kind word or assistance to a friend or stranger.
