Bill Stinchcomb

William J. "Bill" Stinchcomb, 71, Topeka, died Sept. 5, 2003, at an Overland Park hospital.

Stinchcomb was executive director of the Kansas Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Counselors Association from 1990 to 1998 and then served as a consultant for KADACA in its day to day operations. He earlier had been managing editor of The Topeka Business Report, which later became The Topeka Metro News.

He was executive director of informational services for Washburn University from 1981 to 1985 and served on the editorial staff of The Capital-Journal, where he was employed from 1968 to 1981. He had worked the police beat and became business editor before joining the staff at Washburn University.

He was born July 13, 1932, in his grandparents' home in Marion County, the son of Myreta Blanche and Melvin Joseph "Joe" Stinchcomb. He graduated from Wichita East High School and earned a bachelor's degree in communication arts from Washburn University. He began his career in journalism in Wichita as a photographer at The Eagle Beacon.

Stinchcomb was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church and past member of Public Relations Society of Topeka, the Society of Association Executives, Topeka Yacht Club, and Topeka Chess Club. He had raced sailboats and enjoyed gardening and reading.

Survivors include a daughter, Diedre Frost, Topeka; four sons, Bob Benoit, Kevin Benoit, Rick Benoit, and Joseph Stinchcomb, all of Topeka; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday at St. David's Episcopal Church. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery.
