Billy Patterson

One of the "greatest generation" is gone, but the world is a much better place because he was here.

Billy "Pat" Patterson roamed the world in some highly regarded capacities as a construction supervisor. He walked the steel beams, raised the huge loads by guiding giant cranes, and wherever his work took him he was dedicated to duty and a keen observer of mankind.

While he'd lived nearly everywhere, he called Marion "home" and following retirement moved back for years of enjoyment.

He and his wife Joyce were willing workers in Valley United Methodist Church and constant volunteers in worthy community projects.

A strong supporter of labor unions, and a Democrat, he often was at political odds with conservative Kansans but never let that get in the way of friendship.

During World War II, though only a kid, he volunteered for dangerous convoy duty with the Merchant Marine. From that time until the end of his battle with cancer this week, he dedicated his life to others, was noted for his gentlemanly ways, and could always be counted on when needed.

Though friends and family are mourning his death, he'd much prefer they celebrate his life. Which we do.
