Birthday celebration planned for George Meyer
George Albert Meyer will be the guest of honor during an "old fashioned birthday party" March 20. He will be 90 years old.
His children will host the party from 2 to 4 p.m. at the senior community center in Tampa. All friends and family are invited to attend. No gifts are requested.
Friends and family are asked to send cards of special memories to George at POBox 5, Ellinwood, or give him a call at (620) 564-2883.
Born northeast of Tampa to Gerhard and Wilhemine Meyer, George graduated from Tampa High School and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Wichita Business College in 1937.
He worked at Bodine Drilling Co. in Great Bend and ran the office until July 31, 1941, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. There, he was a technical sergeant in charge of medical supplies in Camp Cook, Calif., before serving in France. He returned to Great Bend in 1946.
Meyer worked for Isern Drilling Co. in Ellinwood until retiring in 1984. He and his family owned a farm in Marion County where he owned a herd of prize-winning Hereford cattle for nearly 50 years.
He married Anna Millicent Noel June 24, 1947, in Pittsburg.
The couple have five children, Madeline Gabriel of Studio City, Calif.; Elaine DeTour of Tucson, Ariz.; Natalie Windholz of Gorham; and Edward and Richard Meyer both of Wichita.
George has been active in the Ellinwood community as a committee chairman for Boy Scout Troop #153, an elder with St. John's Lutheran Church for 17 years, and a school board member or treasurer for 37 years.
