Board approves MHS fund-raisers
The Board of Education of USD 408 approved fund-raising plans for 11 Marion High School groups at the board's regular meeting Monday night.
Cheerleaders will have a car wash at Art in the Park Sept. 20. They also will sell pom-pons at games and conduct a cheerleader camp for Marion Elementary School students Oct. 10.
Dance team will have a camp on Jan. 9 or 16 for MES students.
Family Career and Community Leaders of America, will raffle, at varsity football games, a stadium blanket they have made. They plan two other fund-raising events.
Future Educators of America will sell flowers for Valentine's Day and may work the concessions stand.
FFA will sell fruit and meat October through December and operate the concessions stand for high school basketball, wrestling, and track seasons.
Forensics has many fund-raisers planned: Selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts at Art in the Park; a cake raffle at home football and basketball games; operating the concessions stand at football games; baby sitting at Art in the Park; working at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, Mo., during the second semester; "Beware of the Llama," both semesters this year; selling a discount card;
Also, a book fair and soup supper this year; a lip sync contest in the second semester; car wash pledges; a CVL league meeting meal Nov. 12; a CVL institute hospitality room, concessions, and student meal; and an original senior Halloween play in October.
The Junior Class is selling magazines until Monday, and will raise money for the junior/senior prom in spring 2004.
Key Club plans will be finalized at a Sept. 24 meeting.
National Honor Society will have its annual cookie dough sale this fall. Proceeds help pay for the spring induction banquet. Some of the proceeds also go toward purchase of supplies for community service day, and any remainder goes to a different project each year.
Two years ago the group bought computer chairs for Marion City Library. Last year members gave $1,000 to volunteers in the community: Emergency Medical Service workers and fire departments in Marion and Florence.
Student Council will sell sweatshirts and sponsor dances.
The vocal music department will sell concessions at volleyball games.
