Boone named outstanding wrestler at Remington
Boone, Ewert take home first placings; Marion grapplers place fourth overall
If Marion High School wrestler Steven Boone achieves his goal he'll be one of the six top wrestlers in his weight class in state competition this year.
And he may be well on his way toward that goal. Boone, a junior at MHS, was named the outstanding wrestler Saturday during the Remington Tournament.
The award is presented to the top wrestler at each tournament, said MHS wrestling coach Chad Adkins.
"The coaches determine which wrestler will receive the award," Adkins explained. "Usually, they have to do something out of the ordinary."
Boone stood out during Saturday's tournament with an outstanding performance which included defeating the number four ranked wrestler in the state, Eric Stuhlsatz of Garden Plain.
"I was pretty happy because I pinned him in the second period," Boone said.
Boone has been wrestling since the seventh grade and said Saturday's outstanding wrestler award was his first such honor.
Not only did Boone bring home a first place from the Remington tourney, so too did teammate Zac Ewert in the 130-pound weight category. Ewert defeated Wade Williams of Chapparal by a fall.
Also placing at the tournament were second place finishers Chelsea Arnhold and Thad Looper; Jordan Trapp and Adam Depler with third place finishes; and Gavin Moore with a fourth place.
With a combined team score of 101 1/2, the Marion grapplers brought home fourth place overall.
"We wrestled very well this weekend, although we were short a couple wrestles," Adkins said. "We are looking very good going into regionals."
Regional action begins at 2 p.m. Friday at Chase County. Matches continue on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Looking for the chance to qualify for a return trip to state are Marion wrestlers Boone, Chelsea Arnhold, and Looper.
As one of the few female wrestlers in Kansas, Arnhold has captured the attention of various sports writers throughout the state including an article in a recent edition of the Wichita Eagle.
