Boyfriend pops question at karaoke contest

Heidi Doyle of Holton is a student at Emporia State University. So is her boyfriend, Chuck Maggard of Marion.

Doyle was entered in the novelty division of Friday night's Chingawassa Days karaoke contest, on the main stage in Central Park.

She sang Shania Twain's hit, "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" Then, Maggard surprised her by serenading her with Kenny Chesney's hit, "The Good Stuff."

More surprises were in store. He then knelt before here, on stage, with their voices still "miked," and told her how much she meant to him, then asked, "Will you marry me?"

Of course, her reply was, "of course," which she repeated when Chuck said he did not hear her reply.

He had the engagement ring ready to slip on her finger.

Near-pandemonium reigned for a while, as the happy event led to much back-slapping, photo-taking and "congrats."

Doyle's parents, an aunt and uncle, and other friends and relatives from the Holton area were on hand. The secret was well-kept, Maggard said, although many in Marion were "in on it."
