Braves bruise Wildcats

Marion Middle School Wildcats traveled Thursday to Council Grove for the final CVJL game.

Battered, bruised, and injured, the Wildcats could not get things going against the bigger Braves.

The loss of quarterback Calvin Jeffrey in the second quarter slowed the usually potent Wildcat offense. In the 18-0 loss, Austin Hager gained only 90 yards on 20 carries. Justin Jacobson, who was nursing a sore hip, had seven carries for 15 yards, and Jeffrey had only two carries before his injury.

Defensively the Wildcats valiantly defended the goal twice on goal line stands.

Hager collected 14 tackles, Hank Collett seven, Justin Jacobson six, Derek Riggs and Jacob Czarnowsky five each, Brett Billings four, Calvin Jeffrey and Adam Trapp three each, Zac Fine and Chase Carlson two each, and Zach Helmsted one.

The 4-1 Wildcats will host Hillsboro Thursday. It is parent's night. Council Grove travels to Wichita Independent for their final CVJL game and a chance to win the championship.

The Marion seventh graders raised their record to 1-1 with a 22-6 win. Mitchell Leppke scored twice and Luke Gordon caught a touchdown pass.
