Brookens named to all-state orchestra
A Marion High School student has been named to the Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) all-state orchestra, according to MHS music instructors Mike Connell and Adam White.
Also, several local students recently auditioned for state band and state choir positions.
Justin Brookens, junior, was named first chair trumpet in the all-state orchestra. That honor means Brookens is one of the best trumpet players in the state.
The all-state orchestra will perform during the KMEA state convention in February.
"This is the second year Justin has been named to the all-state orchestra," said instrumental music instructor Connell. "He's a really talented kid."
Brookens auditioned for a slot in either state band or orchestra on Dec. 14.
"When you go to audition, you're auditioning for both," Connell explained. "But, you can express a preference."
Besides Brookens, others who auditioned on Dec. 14 were Heidi Zogelman on French horn, and Jessica DeForest on oboe.
The three had previously been named to the South Central District Honor Band.
Earning the right to audition for the state band/orchestra is in itself an honor, Connell explained.
"They are the cream. For a school our size to have three students audition, that's pretty extraordinary," he said.
District honor choir
One month ago, five students were named to the South Central District Honor Choir following auditions, according to White, MHS vocal music instructor.
On Dec. 7, the district choir performed.
District choir members and the parts they sing are Michael Brookens, bass; Brandi Peterie-Shipman, soprano; Erin Fruechting, alto; Hannah Eis, alto, and Tyler Miesse, tenor.
