Brookens receives volunteer award
Michael Brookens, Marion High School senior, recently was recognized as a distinguished finalist of top youth volunteers in Kansas for community service activities.
Brookens was one of six Kansas students recognized for their efforts with two being selected as winners. For his efforts, he received an engraved bronze medallion.
He was a finalist because he helped re-establish a summer theater program for young people in Marion by serving as co-director of a full-length student musical production. He worked during a four-week period and conducted auditions, recruited an accompanist and technical crew, designed choreography, led rehearsals, applied stage makeup, and provided an offstage voice during the performance.
Brookens is the son of Robert and Anita Brookens, Marion.
