Buddy Poppy campaign is Saturday
The Ladies Auxiliary to Ecker-Fulkerson-Slifer VFW Post #6958 will hold the annual Old Settlers' Day Buddy Poppy Campaign Saturday, prior to the OSD parade.
VFW Buddy Poppies will be distributed by the auxiliary by donation.
For veterans in VA hospitals, domiciliaries, and state veterans homes, every day is VFW Buddy Poppy Day. These men and women assemble the poppies, tie them in bunches of 10, and pack them in boxes of 500, 1,000, or 2,000, for shipment to VFW posts and ladies' auxiliaries.
The VFW pays the veteran for the work. In most cases, the extra money provides additional income for those small luxuries which make hospital life more tolerable.
The poppy assembly also is used as therapy to provide exercise for fingers and hands crippled by wounds, disease, or the effects of old age.
The funds raised by the general public's generous donations help support veterans service programs and relief for needy veterans and their families.
The VFW Buddy Poppy campaign is one that has a two-fold purpose in that it truly is all about veterans helping veterans and living up to the VFW motto of "Honor the dead by helping the living."
Support this worthy cause by buying and wearing a VFW Buddy Poppy Saturday.
