Burdick: Graduations, receptions top the news

Naomi Nelson and Tom Nelson attended graduation exercises May 14 at Kansas City. Naomi's granddaughter, Rachel Nelson, daughter of David and Jennifer Nelson of Kansas City, graduated from the Sumner Academy of Arts & Sciences. They were overnight guests and returned home Tuesday.

Charles Gutsch attended the Centre school instrumental and vocal program May 15 at Centre High School. His grandchildren, Shelby and Justin Deines were in the band.

Neva Peterson attended a graduation party Sunday afternoon for Savannah Forsberg at the Legion hall.

Burdick Council of Clubs met May 14 at the Legion shelter house with 14 present. A theme for the annual Labor Day event was chosen and entertainment reports were given. More work was done on the calendar of events and several concessions will be available. Parade and prizes were discussed. Plans are being made for another cookbook. The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Legion shelter house.

Visitors of Evelyn Forsberg on Monday were Harry Schump and Marcus and Sabrina Dunkin and Logan.

Burdick UMW met May 16 at the Burdick United Methodist Church fellowship hall with seven members in attendance. Darlene Gutsch had devotions. Jean Ecklund gave the lesson. Diana Jost served refreshments. Reports were given on the guest night in April and UMW Sunday. The next meeting will be June 20.

Dean Forsberg was a Tuesday dinner guest of Evelyn Forsberg. Savannah Forsberg was a Tuesday evening visitor.

Ken and Alice Peterson of Herington were Saturday afternoon visitors of Neva Peterson after the Strand sale.

Ruth Riggin was a May 12 guest for a Mother's Day supper at the home of Lyal and Julie Sader at Salina. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Chris Bielefeld, Seth and Morgan, Brian Sader and Missy and Sammy, and Helen Sader.

Evelyn Forsberg and Harry Schump were Thursday afternoon visitors of Earl and Ruth Schump at Herington.

Mary Deane Peterson visited Lee Shade and Ilse Phillips Tuesday afternoon and brought them a loaf of homemade bread.

Dean Forsberg and Savannah were Friday dinner guests of Evelyn Forsberg. Wade Rickenbrode was a Saturday and overnight guest of Evelyn's.

Charles and Darlene Gutsch attended a graduation party Sunday evening for Kyle Hett, son of Glen and Pam Hett at Marion. Kyle was a member of the Marion High School class of 2007.

Ruth Riggin was a Sunday dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Sader and Rachel at Lindsborg. It was an 85th birthday celebration for Helen Sader. Other guests were the honored guest, Helen, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Bella, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Tong, Lisa Sader, Lyal and Julie Sader, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Bielefeld, Seth and Morgan, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Sader, Frank and Anna Mae Stika, and Lori Moldenhauer.

Harry Schump and Wade Rickenbrode were Sunday dinner guests of Evelyn Forsberg. They attended graduation at Centre High School and a party afterward for Savannah Forsberg at the Legion hall.

Twenty-six attended the meeting of Burdick Senior Citizens Friday evening. Two foreign exchange students who attend Centre High School presented the program. Refreshments were served. The next meeting will be at 8 p.m. June 15. It will be a light supper and food will be furnished.

Forrest and Marie Anderson visited LaVerne and Maurine Johnson Friday at Bethany Home, Lindsborg.

Forrest and Marie Anderson were Sunday evening visitors of Charles and Mona Kniebel, White City.

Charles and Darlene Gutsch attended Centre High School graduation Sunday afternoon. Their granddaughter, Jessica Deines was a member of the graduating class. They attended a party for her at the home of her parents, Jeff and Gayla Deines, Shelby and Justin. Later in the afternoon, they attended a party for their great-niece, Megan Gutsch, who also was a member of the graduating class. It was held at the home of her parents, Scott and Sharon Gutsch at Lincolnville.

Forrest and Marie Anderson attended the Centre commencement and a reception following for Savannah Forsberg.

A large crowd attended the Irvin and Audine Strand sale Saturday. Burdick Relay for Life served the lunch. The Strands will be greatly missed in the community.

Charles and Darlene Gutsch attended the instrumental spring concert May 7 at Herington High School. Their grandson, Anthony Gutsch, plays the trombone in the seventh/eighth grade band.

Dr. Scotty and Karin Patton of Phillipsburg were late Friday afternoon visitors of Neva Peterson. They also were going to their daughter's college graduation, which was Saturday morning at Manhattan.

Joyce Roever was a Thursday afternoon caller of Mary Deane Peterson. Mr. and Mrs. Bret Beye, Cuyler and Chelsea of Herington were Thursday evening supper guests of Mary Deane.

Bill Peterson of Herington visited Neva Peterson Friday and brought her a bouquet of flowers for Mother's Day and as a remembrance of Mark's 57th birthday.

Friday morning visitors of Mary Deane Peterson were Wes Stewart and Scott Peterson of El Dorado.

Evelyn Forsberg was a Saturday afternoon visitor of Mike and Jane Rickenbrode, Wade and Morgan at Council Grove.

Bill Peterson of Herington took Mary Deane Peterson to Al's Café Friday for lunch.

Gary and Marilyn Hageberg went to Topeka Wednesday evening to attend an outdoor band concert at Topeka High School. Their grandson, Phillip, is a member of the band and plays the clarinet.

Ruth Riggin accompanied Dan and Linda Peterson and Myrtle Peterson to the Ramona Café Sunday for dinner. They were joined by Linda's parents, Warren and Paula Fike. Linda and Ruth visited at the Fike home while Dan took Myrtle back to Herington.

Tad Remy was a Monday dinner guest of Lee and Elinor Remy. Lee and Elinor attended the FFA banquet Monday evening at Centre.

Bret and Lisa Beye, Samantha, Elizabeth, Cuyler, and Chelsea of Herington hosted a pre-Mother's Day supper and celebration for Samantha's birthday Saturday evening. Guests were Burdette and Maureen Peterson, Mary Deane Peterson, Jenny Schrader, Shea and Hunter, Shelly Peterson and Josie, and Shannon Granzow, Trent and Shae.

Kent and Jean Brunner entertained May 6 with an early Mother's Day dinner. Guests were Nolan Brunner, Jill Brunner and Tucker, and Charles and Arlene Carlson.

Virgil Boll of Texas called on Lee and Elinor Remy Sunday afternoon.

Mary Deane Peterson was a Sunday dinner guest of Wayne and Nancy Hanson and Allen.

Charles and Arlene Carlson were Mother's Day dinner guests of Mike and Linda Carlson.

Forrest and Marie Anderson were weekend guests of Gary and Karen Korte at Emporia. They all went out to eat together on Mother's Day.

Jean Brunner, Jill Brunner and Tucker, and Ramona and Amy Hanely were Sunday afternoon visitors of Charles and Arlene Carlson. They planted flowers for Arlene.

Darrell and Candice Denault of Salina came Saturday afternoon to visit Neva Peterson. They were overnight guests and all went to Hebron Lutheran Church Sunday. The Denaults left Sunday afternoon.

Misty Childs dies

in rollover crash

Misty Childs, 27, of Lehigh died May 22 as a result of a car crash that occurred May 20 in Harvey County.

According to Harvey County Sheriff A.J. Wuthnow, Jessica Janzen, 18, of Hillsboro, was driving a vehicle at 10:50 p.m. May 20 on K-15 near Northwest 60th Road that was registered to Childs and Childs was a passenger in the front seat. Janzen swerved to avoid hitting a deer and Childs grabbed the wheel. The vehicle over-corrected and rolled.

Childs was ejected from the vehicle. She was taken to Newton Medical Center and then transferred to Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis campus, Wichita where she died.
