Burns community recognized as leader of the year
The Burns community recently was named a leader of the year by Huck Boyd Institute for Rural Development.
Burns was recognized for community spirit through the Burns PRIDE Committee initiative that distributed two-foot concrete roosters to Burns businesses and residents.
More than 60 roosters have been painted and decorated, some given creative names like Cockadoodle Dandy to Vincent Van Crow.
Community boosters also successfully built a community center with volunteer labor, and have hosted 500 guests from 110 countries.
Burns was one of five recognized for outstanding accomplishments and leaders of the year for 2006.
The Huck Boyd Institute is a public-private partnership between K-State Research and Extension and the Huck Boyd Foundation. The foundation office is located at Phillipsburg, and the institute's office is at Kansas State University, Manhattan.
