Larry and Sandy Yianakopulos of McPherson have reserved a campsite at Cottonwood Point, Marion Reservoir, for two weeks. They plan to be joined by family members for the Fourth of July weekend.
When their children were home, the couple often camped in Colorado using a tent or pop-up camper. They have been camping at Marion Reservoir for at least 10 years and have a camper-trailer.
Their children also go camping on a regular basis.
"Camping is the least expensive thing to do," Sandy said. A camp site at Marion Reservoir has a regular rate of $14, $7 for those over 60.
"I like to get away from everyday life and take it easy for a few days," Larry said.
He works at Phillips Lighting in Salina, and Sandy works at a physicians' clinic in Moundridge.
They said they always reserve spots in the same general area at Cottonwood Point. They like the tall, shade trees, big lot, and toilet/shower facilities close at hand. The children can set up a tent, if they like.
Grandchildren often spend time with the couple. They like to go swimming and bike riding. Friends of the couple also camp nearby. They sometimes get together in the evening to play cards.
Larry especially enjoys the absence of modern electronic devices such as radio, TV, and computers. He thinks people spend too much time using those things and don't take the time to relate to others.
"Kids nowadays have a hard time relating to country life," he said. "Camping makes them more creative and also gives us time to share our values with them."
