Car wrecks following chase

A Kansas City, Mo., man was taken into custody Tuesday following a car chase in and near Peabody.

Orval Bethard, 35, was arrested for reckless driving and related charges. He is being held in Marion County Jail.

The incident started about midnight, when Peabody Police Officer Bruce Burke attempted to pull over a vehicle for failure to stop at a stop sign.

The car, a 2002 Ford Mustang, did not stop, and other agencies were notified, said Sheriff Lee Becker.

Sheriff's deputy Aaron Waddell sighted the car on 60th, just west of Peabody, at about 12:34 a.m. He estimated it exceeded speeds of 100 miles per hour.

The car failed to negotiate a curve at the Marion and Harvey county line, and wrecked. A passenger, a woman from Kansas City, was taken into custody by Burke.

Bethard fled the scene. Waddell said officers began a discussion on bringing a dog to the scene. At that point, Bethard stood up and surrendered, Waddell said.

Marion Police Officer Michel Soyez and a Harvey County sheriff's deputy also participated in the stop.

Bethard and the passenger were taken to Newton Medical Center for treatment of injuries then transported to Marion County Jail. The woman was released.

Waddell said the car, which Missouri officials say was taken from a car lot in Columbia, likely is a total loss due to the damage it suffered.
