Carlson-Hajek re-elected to lead Centre board

At its Monday meeting, Centre USD 397 Board of Education re-elected Ronnie Carlson as president and Leona Hajek as vice president for the 2002-2003 year.

The board spent one hour and five minutes in executive session with Superintendent Demitry Evancho and Clerk Peggy Falen to discuss teacher contracts. No action was taken upon opening, but the board approved a special meeting for 6:30 a.m. Monday with the intent of approving contracts, depending on the teachers' acceptance.

After a 15 minute executive session to discuss classified staff compensation, the board, in open session, approved designated wage increases ranging from 54 cents per hour for the board clerk to 11 cents per hour for the high school library aide.

After a 30 minute executive session to discuss administrators' compensation, some of that time with Evancho, the following open actions were taken.

Evancho was granted a $1,200 increase plus continued use of a district vehicle.

Principal Neal Weltha also was granted a $1,200 raise.

The board watched a video about manufacture and installation of special galvanized steel roofing panels that can withstand high winds and large hail, are fire resistant, and would provide additional insulation.

Members were impressed with the material, which would be placed on top of existing shingles on a wood lattice framework.

Evancho estimated the cost to roof the original high school building at around $250,000. More than $60,000 of that would come from a hail damage insurance award and the remainder from capital outlay. He was instructed to solicit bids for material and labor.

An improved guttering and drainage system will be incorporated into the roofing project.

Treasurer Falen could only submit estimates on dollar amounts for the 2002-2003 budget because the county clerk's office has not come up with final valuation figures, she said.

It was the consensus of board members to keep the mill levy at the same level as the previous year.

The board authorized Falen to prepare a budget based on the state-required 20 mills to support the general fund and levies of approximately 17.599 mills LOB, 4 mills capital outlay, and approximately 4.25 mills for bond and interest.

Fiscal appointments approved were: clerk of the board, Peggy Falen; deputy clerk of the board, Neal Weltha; district treasurer, Francie Mueller; deputy district treasurer, Sheri Stahlecker; district petty cash fund, Francie Mueller; high school petty cash fund, Dawn Luna; high school activity fund, Neal Weltha; elementary school activity fund, Demitry Evancho; purchasing agent, Francie Mueller.
