Carlsons' Grocery updates cash register system

Bar code changes are on the horizon and Carlsons' Grocery wants to be ready.

Becoming the second business in the state to do so, the grocery store owners, Greg and Linda Carlson and Mitch Carlson, recently updated cash registers and software with necessary equipment to accommodate future changes in bar codes.

Bar codes on products will be smaller in size and universal. Europe, Japan, and the U.S. will use the same bar code system, said Bill Bockman of Retail Data System.

The updated bar coding system will be able to track the point of origin of the product, which will be particularly useful for tracking meat and produce, Bockman added.

With these changes, the store's five-year-old cash register system would not be able to scan the new bar coded items.

The subtle changes will not affect store customers.

"There won't be any changes in service or operation as far as our customers are concerned," said Greg Carlson.

The new system will add flexibility.

"It has a lot of additional features," said Mitch Carlson, store owner, that could expand the store's services.

The equipment features a larger, flat screen monitor that is easier for the clerk and the customer to see.

Symbols on the clerk's screen allow the clerk to identify produce items by sight on the monitor.

Once the item is identified, the clerk touches a picture of the item and the register automatically rings up the appropriate amount for the weight and price per pound.

The system was purchased from and installed by a Wichita company.
