Carol Johnson is 55th president of Kansas Academy of Family Physicians years ago

Nearly 200 family physicians and other medical professionals from across the state attended the Kansas Academy of Family Physician's (KAFP) 2003 annual meeting June 19-21 at the Marriott Hotel in Wichita.

Carol A. Johnson, M.D., of Wichita, who grew up at Marion, was installed as the 55th KAFP president by Carolyn Lopez, M.D., of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

"The contributions made by family physicians to the state of Kansas and to the communities in which they serve is one of the state's greatest treasures. The day-to-day, compassionate, comprehensive, cradle to grave, first contact care delivered by the family physicians in our state is incomparable, irreplaceable. Without the family physicians in the state, who would be taking care of Kansas?" said Dr. Johnson during her president's acceptance speech.

Dr. Johnson is a family physician at Emergency Services of Kansas in the hospital emergency departments in Dodge City, El Dorado, Newton, and Winfield. She also is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on a research project and doing other clinical research projects through Research Support Personnel in Wichita. Her passion is providing medical care and working with children in orphanages near Rangoon, Myanmar. Prior to her current position, Dr. Johnson was the Residency Director at Wesley Family Practice Center, Wichita for 11 years and a KU School of Medicine-Wichita faculty member for 21 years.

Dr. Johnson grew up in Marion. She is the daughter of Harold Bowers.

She and her husband, Mike, live in Wichita with their three children, Caleb, a pre-med student at WSU, David, who will start at WSU this fall, and Rebekah, a senior at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire.

Dr. Johnson received her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where she received the James Ryan Scholarship. She completed her family practice residency training at Wesley Family Practice at Wichita.

Established in 1948, the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians (KAFP) is the largest medical specialty society in the state.
